Staff members of BMS Campus CQA participated in the Transnational Education (TNE) Quality Assurance Workshop, held in May 2025.
The workshop was organised by the British Council in collaboration with the UK Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), designed to strengthen institutional capacity in quality assurance for TNE provision, the programme focused on aligning local practices with internationally recognised standards.
BMS Campus staff members Zahra Nawfer and Sharuga Rajeswara with workshop facilitators Dr. Jennifer Cann, Quality Manager at QAA, and Krisztina Ford, Quality Specialist at QAA.
About the Workshop
As Transnational Education (TNE) becomes an increasingly vital component of global higher education, the TNE Quality Assurance Workshop was initiated to address the complex challenges associated with maintaining academic quality across borders. The workshop aimed to equip academic and administrative staff of Sri Lankan institutions with a deeper understanding of UK-based quality assurance models and practices.
Its emphasis was on building awareness of quality expectations in international partnerships, strengthening institutional governance and quality culture, improving the implementation of quality assurance processes throughout the student journey, and promoting collaboration between UK awarding bodies and Sri Lankan delivery partners. The workshop is part of a broader effort by the British Council and QAA to enhance the long-term sustainability and credibility of Sri Lanka’s transnational education sector.
Key Areas of Focus
The workshop provided in-depth insights into:
- Establishing and managing sustainable TNE partnerships
- Developing an inclusive, campus-wide quality culture
- Curriculum design and validation aligned with UK frameworks
- Assessment practices, internal moderation, and feedback
- Data-informed monitoring and annual review processes
- Student support, feedback systems, and engagement strategies
- Global challenges in QA including digital delivery and AI integration
Sessions were enriched by case studies, collaborative exercises, and real-time reflection on institutional experiences.
The sessions were facilitated by experienced quality assurance professionals:

Both facilitators brought substantial expertise in higher education policy, transnational academic governance, and the implementation of robust quality assurance frameworks.

The four-day workshop was structured into two sessions each day. The content covered key aspects of quality assurance and enhancement in TNE, as outlined below:

Morning: Quality Assurance of Teaching and Learning
Afternoon: Focus on Assessment - Friday, 30 May 2025 (6 Hours)
Morning: Moving from Quality Assurance to Enhancement
Afternoon: 21st Century Challenges in Quality Assurance
Over the course of the workshop, participants completed 24 hours of structured training across the four days.
Outcomes and Relevance
Participation in the workshop significantly enhanced the knowledge and capacity of CQA staff at BMS Campus in the area of transnational quality assurance. The practical knowledge gained is expected to support internal improvements in curriculum development, assessment processes, student support, and governance structures.
